چکیده

We investigate Laughlin’s fractional quantum Hall effect wave function in the cylinder geometry of Laughlin’s integer quantum Hall effect argument, at filling factor 1/3. We show that the plasma analogy leads to a periodic density, and that the wave function admits a representation as a “quantum polymer”, reminiscent of the quantum dimer model by Rokhsar and Kivelson. We explain how the representation can be exploited to compute the normalization and one-particle density in the limit of infinitely many particles.

Symmetry breaking in Laughlin’s state on a cylinder

We investigate Laughlin’s fractional quantum Hall effect wave function on a cylinder. We show that it displays translational symmetry breaking in the axial direction for sufficiently thin cylinders. At filling factor 1/p, the period is p times the period of the filled lowest Landau level. The proof uses a connection with one-dimensional polymer systems and discrete renewal equations.

Learnable Representations of Language A course at ESSLLI 2010

Learnability is a vital property of formal grammars: repre-sentation classes should be defined in such a way that they are learnable. One way to build learnable representations is by making them objectiveor empiricist: the structure of the representation should be based on thestructure of the language. Rather than defining a function from repre-sentation to language we should...

Non-adiabatic effect on Laughlin’s argument of the quantum Hall effect

We have numerically studied a non-adiabatic charge transport in the quantum Hall system pumped by a magnetic flux, as one of the simplest theoretical realizations of nonadiabatic Thouless pumping. In the adiabatic limit, a pumped charge is quantized, known as Laughlin’s argument in a cylindrical lattice. In a uniform electric field, we obtained a formula connecting quantized pumping in the adia...

Conformal Symmetry and Universal Properties of Quantum Hall States

The low-lying excitations of a quantum Hall state on a disk geometry are edge excitations. Their dynamics is governed by a conformal field theory on the cylinder defined by the disk boundary and the time variable. We give a simple and detailed derivation of this conformal field theory for integer filling, starting from the microscopic dynamics of (2 + 1)-dimensional non-relativistic electrons i...

Compressive and rarefactive dust-ion acoustic solitary waves in four components ‎quantum plasma with dust-charge variation

Based on quantum hydrodynamics theory (QHD), the propagation of nonlinear quantum dust-ion acoustic (QDIA) solitary waves in a ‎collision-less, unmagnetized four component quantum plasma consisting of electrons, positrons, ions and stationary negatively charged ‎dust grains with dust charge variation is investigated using reductive perturbation method. The charging current to the dust grains ca...
